Collection  : The drug is collected in early summer, washed clean, exposed to strong sun light repeatedly and piled up for almost drying then removed from fibrous root and dried.

Description  : Root of Liriope spicata: Fusiform, the two ends tapering, 1.2 - 3 cm long, 0.4 - 0.7 cm in diameter. Externally pale yellow to brownish yellow with irregular longitudinal wrinkles. Texture flexible but hard and fragile after drying, fracture pale yellow to brownish yellow, horny stele small. Odour slight, taste sweet, sticky on chewing.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Root of Liriope muscari Epidermis consisting of 1 layer of cells. Cortex broad, parenchymatous cells containing raphides of calcium oxalate, 27 - 60 µm long, endodermal cells with thickened and lignified walls, passage cells found. 1 - 2 layered stone cells lying at the outside of endodermis with thickened inner and lateral walls, finely and densely pitted. Stele fairly small, phloem bundles 7 - 15, each located between 2 xylem arms respectively, the lignified cells in the inner side of xylem bundles linking up to a ring. Pith small. Parenchymatous cells subrounded.Root of Liriope muscari: Velamen of 3 - 6 layers of lignified cells, raphides 25 - 46 µm long. The outside of endodermis showing 1 layer of stone cells. Phloem bundles 16 - 20.2. View to thin place under the ultra violet light (365 nm), a fluorescence with light blue color appears.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean and dry.

Action  : To nourish yin and promote production of body fluid, moisten lung, cool and refresh the heart.
