Collection  : The plant is collected in autumn when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun. The seed is tapped off, removed from foreign matters and dried in the sun.

Description  : Flattened ovate, 4 - 6mm long, 2 - 3mm wide. Externally reddish brown or greyish brown, smooth lustrous, obtuse at one end, acute and slightly oblique at the other end. Hilum occurring at the sunken part of the acute end, raphe pale brown, occurring at the edge of one side. Testa thin, endosperm brown, membranous, cotyledons 2, yellowish white, oily. Odorless, taste bean like on chewing.

Identification  : 1.Soak a few of the drug with warm water, the epidermal mucilage layer swells to a transparent mucilage membrane surrounding the seed.2.Transverse section: Epidermal cells relatively large, sub-rectangular, walls containing mucilage, swelling and showing striations when contacted with water, externally covered with cuticle. Hypodermis consisting of 1 - 5 layers of parenchymatous cells with slightly thickened walls. Fiber layer consisting of 1 layer of fiber cells, arranging walls thickened and lignified, lumen relatively narrow, striations indistinctly visible, cells decadent layer indistinct. Pigment layer consisting of 1 layer of flattened parenchymatous cells, containing brownish red contents. Cells of endospermum and cotyledons polygonal, containing fatty oil and aleurone grains. Aleurone grains 7 - 14µm in diameter, containing 1 - 2 crystalloids and globoids.3.To 0.5g of the powder add a small amount of water in a test tube, haning stripe of trinitrophenol TP, impregnated with 10% solution of sodium carbonate, stopper it tightly, heat on a water bath for 3 - 5 minutes, the test paper turns to a brick red color.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matters, break to pieces or grind after frying.

Action  : To cause lubrication, and to dispel wind.

Indication  : constipation, dryness and itching of the skin, withering and loss of hair

Precautions  : Contraindicated in paatients with loose bowels.

Dosage  : 9 to 15 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, protected from moth.
