Lindera aggregata in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Collection : The drug is collecte the whole year round, removed from rootlet, washed clean either slice while fresh and dried in the sun or sun-dried directly.
Description : Mostly spindle shape, slightly curved, some constricted in the middle to be monoliform. 6 - 15 cm long, 1 - 3 cm in diameter, externally yellowish brown with longitudinal wrinkles and sparse rootlet scars. Texture hard, slices up to 0.2 - 2 mm thick, transversely cut, surface yellow white or yellowish brown, rays radiating annual rings visible, deep in colour in the middle part. Odour aromatic, taste bitterish and pungent with a cooling sensation. Old and not spindle shape top roots can not be use medicinally.
Identification : Powder: Yellowish white, starch granules fairly abundant, simple granules subspherical oblong or ovoid, 4 - 39 µm in diameter, hilum Y- shaped V- shaped or cleft. Compound granules consisting of 2 - 4 components. Wood fibres yellowish, mostly in bundles, 20 - 30 µm in diameter, walls about 5 µm in thickness with simple pits, lumina filled with granules. Phloem fibres nearly colorless, long spindle shaped, mostly single and scattered, 15 - 17 µm in diameter, walls very thick with indistinct pit canals. Bordered pitted vessels up to about 68 µm in diameter with closely arranged bordered pits. Cell walls of xylem rays slightly thickened, densely pitted. Oil cells oblong, containing brown secretion.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, for the drug not sliced remove rootlets, grade according to size, soften thoroughly and cut into thin slices and dry.
Action : To smooth the flow of qi and relieve pain, and to warm and tonify the kidney and the urinary bladder.
Indication : distending pain in the chest and abdomen accompanied by dyspnea; enuresis and frequency of urination due to hypofunction of the urinary bladder; hernia; dysmenorrhea
Dosage : 3 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place, protected from moth.
