Chinese Name (pinyin): Tinglizi
Chinese Name :
Common Name :Lepidium Seed
Specific Name : Semen lepidii/ Semen descurainiae
Scientific Name:
Collection : The fruit is collected when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun and the seed is gathered and remove from foreign matter.
Description : Seed of Lepidium Apetalum. Flattened ovoid, 1 - 1.5 mm long, 0.5 - 1mm wide. Externally brown or reddish brown, somewhat lustrous with 2 longitudinal furrows, one of them relatively distinct. One end obtuse, the other acute and slightly concave, almost white, hilum situated at the concave end. Odorless, taste slightly pungent and relatively viscous.Seed of Descurainia Sophia: Oblong somewhat flattened, about 1 mm long, 0.5 mm wide. One end obtuse, the other end slightly concave or relatively truncate. Taste slightly pungent and bitter. Somewhat viscous.
Identification : 1.Macerate a small quantity of the drug in water, observe under magnifier, the transparent mucilage layer of Seed of Lipidium apetalum is relatively thick occurred in more than ½ of the width of seed. The transparent mucilage of Seed Descurainia sophia is thin and occurs in less than about 1/5 of the width of the seed.2.Seed of Lepidium apetalum. Powder: yellowish brown. Epidermal cells of tetsa consisting of mucilage cells, rectangular in section view, thickened inner walls, extending outwards to cellulose column, 24 - 34µm long, obtuse rounded, oblique or truncate at the apex,, mucilage striations visible in periphery. Inner epidermal cells of testa yellow, polygonal, sub-square, sometimes long polygonal in surface view, 15 - 42µm in diameter, walls 5 - 8µm thick.Seed of Descurainia sophia: Outer epidermal cells of testa sub-square in section view, cellulose column short. 8 - 18µm long, inner epidermal cells of testa polygonal in surface view.Swelling capacity: Weigh about 0.6g of the drug, carry out the method for determination of swelling capacity (Appendix lX O), not less than 12 for Semen Lepidii and not less than 3 for Semen Descurainiae.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matters.Semen Lepidii or Semen Descurainiae (stir fried): Stir fry as described under the method for simple stir frying (Appendix ll D) until it cracks.
Action : To quench fire in the lung, to relieve dyspnea, and to cause diuresis.
Indication : dyspnea or orthopnea, cough with profuse expectoration and fullness sensation in the chest, accompanied by hydrothorax, ascites and oliguria; edema in pulmonary heart disease
Precautions :
Dosage : 3 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place.
