Laminaria japonica in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Dankunbu µÀ¥²¼ Chinese Name (pinyin): Kunbu

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Laminaria

Specific Name  : Thallus laminariae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in summer and autumn and dried in the sun

Description  : Thallus Laminariae: Rolled and folded into a mass or winded up into a bundle. Blackish brown or greenish brown throughout, eternally showing white frost like powder. After soaking in water, swollen into long flattened strap. 50 -150 cm long, 10 - 40 cm wide relatively thick in central part, thinner and undulate on edges. Slightly coriaceous, remains of stripe compressed cylindrical, odour seaweed like and taste salty.Thallus Eckloniae: Rolled and crumpled into an irregular ball. Black throughout, relatively thin. After soaking in water, swellen into flattened phylloid, 16 - 26 cm long and wide, about 1.6 mm thick, two sides pinnaatiparte, lobes long ligulate, margins serrulate or entire. Texture soft and smooth.

Identification  : 1.Thick, swollen on soaking in water, surface smooth and viscous with transparent mucilage. When twisted with fingers, Thallus Laminariae can not be laminated and Thallus Eckloniae laminated.2.Macerate about 10 g of small pieces in 200 ml of water for several hours, filter and concentrate the filtrate to about 100 ml. To 2 - 3 ml of the concentrated solution, add 1 drop of nitric acid and several drops of silver nitrate TS, a yellow colloidal precipitatre is produced which is slightly soluble in ammonia TS but insoluble in nitric acid.Assay: Weigh accurately 10 g of small pieces to a crucible, ignite gently and keep for 10 minutes whenever the temperature is raised for 100ºC and keep for 40 minutes at 400 - 500ºC. Allow to cool and place the residue in a beaker. Add 100 ml of water, boil for about 5 minutes and filter. Treat the residue with further 2 quantities of 100 ml of water, filter, combine the filtrates, wash the residue with 3 quantities of hot water, combine the washings and the filtrate and concentrate to about 80 ml. Allow to cool. Transfer to a 100 ml volumetric flask and dilute with water to volume. Transfer accurately 5 ml to a glass stopper flask. Add 50 ml of water and 2 drops of methyl red IS, add dropwise. Dilute sulfuric acid solution until a red color is produced. Add 5 ml of freshly prepared bromine TS, heat to boil, add 5 ml of 20% sodium formate solution along the flask wall and heat for 10 - 15 minutes again. Wash the flask wall with hot water, cool, add 5 ml of dilute sulfuric acid solution and 5 ml of 15% solution of potassium iodide, titrate immediately with sodium thiosulfate (0.01 mol/L) VS to pale yellow, add 1 ml of starch IS and continue to titrate until the blue color disappears. Each ml of sodium thiosulfate (0.01 mol/L) VS is equivalent to 0.2115 mg of I.Thallus laminariae contains not less than 0.35% of I; Thallus Eckloniae contains not less than 0.20% of I, calculated on dried basis.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, rinse, briefly dry in the air, cut into wide slivers and dry in the sun.

Action  : To eliminate phlegm, soften hard masses abd dissolve lumps, and to cause diuresis.

Indication  : goiter, scrofula, swelling and pain in the testis; edema

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
