Specific Name  : Fructus kochiae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The plant is collected in autumn when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun. The fruit is gathered and remove from foreign matter.

Description  : Oblate spheroidal, fire-pointed star shape, 1 - 3mm in diameter, surrounded by a persistant perianth. Externally greyish- green or pale brown with 5 membranous winglets. The center of the dorsal surface having a slightly prominent, pointed fruit stalk scar and 5 - 10 radial veins, membranous pericarp visible when the parianth stripped, transluscent. Seeds flattened ovoid, about 1mm long, black. Odor slight and taste slightly bitter.

Identification  : 1.Powder: brown, epidermic cells of perianth polygonal, stomata anomocytic, parenchymatous cells containing clusters of calcium oxalate. Pericarp cells subrectangular or polygonal, thin walled, sinuous containing numerously small prisms of calcium oxalate. Testa cells brown, polygonal or subsquare mostly crumpled.2.To 2g of the powder add 2ml of ethanol, 1.5ml of hydrochloric acid, heat under reflux for 2 hours, filter, concentrate the filtrate to about 5ml, add 10ml of water and transfer to a separating funnel. Extract with 20ml of petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC). Separate the ether layer and evaporate to dryness. Dissolve oleanolic acid CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 1mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel H containing sodium carboxymethylcellulose as the coating substance and chloroform-methanol (40:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 2 µl of the test solution and 4µl of the reference solution to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with phosphomolyyyyybdic acid TS, heat at 105ºC for several minutes. Examine the chromatogram under day light. The spot in the chromatogram obtained with the tes solution correspond in position and colour to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Total ash: not more than 10.0% (
