Collection  : The drug is collected in winter, wash clean removed from rootlet, slice and dried in the sun.

Description  : Mostly in rounded or subrounded transverse slices, 1-2 cm in diameter, 3 - 5 mm thick. Externally brownish or yellowish brown, shrunken, some with root scars or remains of rootlets, transversely cut surface, whitish starcy, usually inflated. Texture fragile, easily broken. Odour aromatic and characteristic and taste pungent.

Identification  : 1.Powder: Yellowish white, starch granules abundant, mainly simple spheroid, ellipsoidal or subtriangular, mostly flattened, 5 - 30 µm in diameter, rather thin walled. The lumen containing yellowish green or purplish red oil drops. Spiral vessels 18 - 37 µm in diameter. Coloured masses irregular yellow or yellowish brown.2. To 0.25 g of the powder add 5 ml of methanol, ultrasonicate for 10 minutes, filter and use the filtrate as the test solution. Dissolve a quantity of p-methoxycinamate CRS in methanol to produce a solution of 5 mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel GF254 as the coating substance and n-hexane-ethyl acetate (18:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 2 µl of each of the two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air and examine under ultra violet light(254 nm). The spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Assay: Carry out the method for determining volatile oil (Appendix X D). It contains not less than 4.5% (ml/mg) of volatile oil.

Dosage  : 6 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
