Collection  : The drug is collected in spring and autumn, wash clean dried in the sun, removed from fibrous roots and membranous leaf sheath and tied up in small bundle.

Description  : Long cylindrical, 30 - 60 cm long, 2 - 4 mm in diameter. Externally yellowish white or yellowish, slightly lustrous, longitudinally wrinkled, nodes distinct and slightly raised, internodes varying in length usually 1.5 - 3 cm long. Texture light, somewhat fragile, fracture white in bark, mostly with cracks arranged radially, stele yellowish, easily stripe from cortex. Odourless, taste slightly sweetish.

Identification  : 1.Heat and reflux 5 g of the coarse powder with 30 ml of benzene for 1 hour and filter. Evaporate 5 ml of the filtrate to dryness, add 1ml of acetic anhydride to dissolve then add 1 - 2 drops of sulfuric acid, a red color is produced which gradually turns to violet red bluish violet and dirty green color at last.2.Boil 1 g of the coarse powder with 10 ml of water for 5 - 10 minutes, filter and concentrate the filtrate to 1 ml, add 1 ml of alkaline cupric tartarate TS, heat on a water bath, a brownish red precipitate is produced.Total ash: Not more than 5.0% (Appendix 1X K)

Processing  : Wash clean, soften briefly, cut into sections, dry and sift.Rhizoma Imperatae (carbonized): Stir fry the sections as describe under the method of carbonizing by stir frying (Appendix ll D) until it becomes brown.

Action  : To arrest bleeding by reducing heat in blood, to remove heat, and to cause diuresis.

Indication  : spiting of blood, epistaxis and hematuria due to heat in the blood; febrile diseases with thirst; jaundice; urinary infection with difficult painful urination; edema in acute nephritis

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 9 to 30 g; 30 to 60 g of the fresh rhizome.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
