Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Bajiaohuixiang

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Chinese Star Anise

Specific Name  : Fructus anisi stellati

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn and winter when the fruit turns from green to yellow and dried after treated with boiling water for a moment or dried directly.

Description  : Mostly aggregated fruit of 8 follicles radiared from the central axis. Follicles 1 - 2cm long, 0.3 - 0.5cm wide, 0.6 - 1cm high, outer surface reddish brown, irregularly winkled, summit beaked, upper part mostly dehiscent, inner surface pale brown, smooth and lustrous. Texture hard and brittle. Fruit stalk 3 - 4cm long, connected to the base of the fruit, curved, usually deciduous. Each follicle containing and compressed ovoid seed, about 6mm long, reddish brown or yellowish brown, lustrous with a hilum at the acute end, endosperm white, oily, odor aromatic, taste pungent and sweet.

Identification  : 1.Powder: Reddish brown, palisade cells of endocarp column shaped, 200-546µm long, walls slightly thick with cross or V shaped pits. Stone cells of testa yellow, subpolygonal in surface view, walls strongly thickened, undulate, lumina branched containing brownish bleack contents, rectangular in lateral view with unevenly thickened walls. Stone cells of peric arp subrectangular, oblong or branched with thickened walls. Fibres long, scattered singly or in bundles, 29 - 60µm in diameter, walls lignified and pitted. Cells of mesocarp reddish brown with oil cells scattered. Cells of endosperm polygonal, containing oil droplets and aleurone grains.2.To 1g of coarse powder add 15ml of petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC)-ether (1:1) stopper tightly, shake for 15 minutes and filter. Evaporate the filtrate on a water bath to dryness and dissolve the residue in 2ml of dehydrated ethanol as the test solution. Apply b2 µl of the test solution to a thin layer chromatographic plate coated with silica gel G containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, dry it in the air and then apply about 2µl of phloroglucinol in hydrochloric acid TS, a pink and vilet red cycle line is exhibited.3.Transfer accurately 10µl of the test solution obtained under identification test (2) to a 10ml volumetric flask, dilute with dehydrated ethanol to volumeand mix well. Carry out the method for spectrophotometry (Appendix V A). The light absorbance of the solution exhibits a maximum at 259nm.4.Prepare a solution of 1g of the coarse powder of fructus anisi stellati reference drug in the same manner as describe under Identification (2) the reference drug solution. Dissolve anisaldehyde CRS in 2ml of dehydrated ethanol to produce a solution containing 20µl per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl A) using silica gel G contining sodium carbxymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and petroleum ether (30 - 60ºC)-acetone-ethyl acetate (9:1:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 5 - 10µl of each of the test solution obtained as described under Identification test (2) and above two solutions to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with phloroglucinol in hydrochloric acid TS. The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference drug solution and the orange to orange red spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with reference solution.Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix X V). It contains not less than 4.0% of the volatile oil.

Processing  :
