Collection : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from foreign matter and dried in the sun.
Description : Subrectangular, ocassionally long ovate, 3 - 8cm long, 1.5 - 4cm wide. Apex with 3 relatively big hard spines, the apical one usually recurved, base trunctate or broadly cuneate, sometimes both sides with 1 - 3 spines, edges somewhat recurved, long ovate leaves usually absent from spines. Upper surface yellowish green or greenish brown, lustrous, lower surface greyish yellow or greyish green. Viens pinnate, petioles short, texture leathery, hard and thick, odorless, taste slightly bitter.
Identification : Transverse section at the base of the leaf, upper epidermal cells subsquare, thick walled covered with a thick cuticle bearing unicellular non-glandular hairs nearmidrib. Lower epidermal cells relatively small, stomata visible. Palisade tissue of 2 - 4 rows of cells, spongy tissue loose, 1 to numerous of collenchymatous cells occurring inside the upper and lower epidermis at midrib. Vascular bundle midrib collateral with lignified fibre groups above and below the vascular bundle. Collenchymatous cells, semi ring of stone cells and lignified fibre groups sequently occurringg inside the epidermis of margin, several tows of collenchymatous cells at the margin near the petioles, absent above the base. Stone cells ocassionally occurring in the collenchyma inside the epidermis of margin and the lower epidermis of midrib and outside the fibre groups below the phloem. Parenchyma and lower epidermis frequently containing clusters of calcium oxalate.
Processing :
Action : To remove heat, to subdue th ehyperactivity of the liver, and to replenish the kidney yin.
Indication : hemoptysis and afternoon fever in phtisis; dizziness, hypertension
Precautions :
Dosage : 9 to 15 g.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place.
