Observe through the tube wall, the moisten powder shows a pink or reddish violet color.(2). Heat under reflux 1g of the powder with 10ml of ethanol for 10 minutes and filter. To 2ml of the filtrate add small quantity of magnesium powder and 3 drops of hydrochloric acid, heat on a water bath, a red colour is produced.(3) To 25g of the drug, cut into pieces, in a rounded-bottom flask, add 250ml of water and connect a volatile oil determination tube.. Add water through the top of the tube until the granulated tube is filled. Add further 1ml of ethyl acetate, connect the tube to a reflux condenser. Heat the flask under reflux for 4 hours then allow it to stand for a few minutes, collect the ethyl acetate layer as the test solution. Dissolve methyl nonyl ketone in ethyl acetate to produce a solution containing 10µg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and n-hexane-ethyl acetate (9:1) as the reference solution. Apply separately to the plate 5µl of the test solution and 2µl of the reference solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in air, spray with dinitrohydrazine TS. The yellow spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash rapidly, cut into sections and dry in the sun.
