Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from foreign matter and dried.

Description  : Cylindrical, somewhat flattened and curved, 5 - 11 cm long, 0.7 - 1.5 cm wide. Externally purplish brown, covered with greyish white, waxy, frost like powder, lustrous after rubbed away and fine warts and linear or reticulated fissures. Apex with a beak shaped remained of stylopod, base with scar of fruit stalk. Texture hard and fragile, easily broken, fructure brownish yellow, lax in the center with plae green or browninsh yellow filiform substances, ocassionally bearing incompleter grown seeds. Odor slight and irritating, taste sweet then pungent.

Identification  : 1.Powder: brownish yellow, stone cells numerous, subrounded, oblong or irregular in shape. 15 - 53µm in diameter with slightly lignified walls surrounded by parenchymatous cells containing prisms of calcium oxalate and few clusters forming crystal fibres bundles often accompanied by subsquare, thick walled cells. Prisms of calcium oxalate 6 - 15µm long, clusters 6 - 14µm in diameter. Parenchymatous cells numerous, lignified, pits and pit canals distinct. Epiderrmal cells of pericarp reddish brown, polygonal in surface view, walls relatively thickened with granular striated cuticle.2.To 1g of the powder add 8ml of ethanol, heat under reflux for 5 minutes, allow to cool and filter. Evaporate 0.5ml of the filtrate in a small porcelain dish to dryness and allow to cool, add 3 drops of acetic anhydride, stir well and add 2 drops of sulfuric acid along the wall of the dish, a reddish purple colour is produce gradually.3.Boil about 1g of the powder in 10ml of water for 10 minutes, filter. Shake the filtrate vigorously, a persistent froth is produced over 15 minutes.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash and dry in the sun. Break to pieces before use.

Action  : To dispel phlegm, to restore consciousness, and to reduce nodulation and cause the subdience of swelling.

Indication  : loss of consciousness in stroke and epilepsy; sore throat, dyspnea and cough with phlegm that is difficult to spit out; constipation external: subcutaneous pyogenic infections

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy and patients with hemoptysis or hematemesis.

Dosage  : 1 to 1.5 g, mostly to be used in making pills or powders; for external use, appropriate quantity to be ground into powder for blowing into nostrils to induce sneezing for topical application after mixed with liquid.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from moth.

Collection  : The drug is collected all year round and dried or cut into slices when fresh and dried.

Description  : Spines consisting of main spines and 1 - 2 branched spines, main spines 3 - 15 cm long or longer, 0.3 - 1cm in diameter, branched spines, 1 - 6 cm long acute at apex. Externally purplish brown or brown. Texture light, hard, uneasily broken. Slices 0.1 - 0.3cm thick, pith lax, pale reddish brown, texture fragile, easily broken, odorless and taste weak.

Identification  : Transverse section: Epidermis consisting of 1 row of cells covered with cuticle, sometimes unicellular non glandular hairs found. Cortex composed of 2 - 3 rows of parenchymatous cells containing brownish red substances. Pericycle fibre bundles in discontinuous ring, surrounded by parenchymatous cells containing prisms of calcium oxalate occasionally and clusters rarely, often accompanied with 1 or 2 - 3 grouped stone cells with thin walls. Phloem narrow. Cambium ring distinct. Xylem in a ring, xylem rays 1 - 2 cells wide. Pith wide. Parenchymatous cells containing a few of starch granules.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, for the un sliced drug, soak briefly, soften thoroughly, cut into thick slices and dry.

Action  : To cause subsidence of swelling, to draw out of pus, and to kill parasites.

Indication  : carbuncle and boil at the early stage of abscess formation external: scabies and leprosy

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 8 g; for external use, appropriate quntity to be steamed with vinegar and applied topiclly.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry plce.
