Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Capejasmine Fruit

Specific Name  : Fructus gardeniae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected from September to November when it turns reddish yellow, remove from the fruit stalk and foreign matter, steam thoroughly or treated with boiling water for a moment then dried.

Description  : Prolate ovoid or ellipsoid, 1.5 - 3.5cm long, 1 - 1.5cm in diameter. The outer surface reddish yellow or brownish red with 6 longitudinal winged ribs and a conspicious longitudinal and branched vein between two ribs. Summit bearing remains of sepals, base somewhat tapering and having a remain of fruit stalk. Pericarp thin and brittle, somewhat lustrous, the inner surface relatively pale in color, lustrous with 2 - 3 raised false septa. Seeds numerous, flattened ovoid, aggregated into a mass, deep red or reddish yellow with fine and dense warts on the surface. Odor slight, taste slightly sour and bitter.

Identification  : 1.Powder: reddish brown, stone cells pericarp subrectangular, fibres of pericarp long and thin, fusiform, about 10µm in diameter up to 110µm long, obliquely mosaicarranged. Crystal stone cells subrounded or polygonal, 17 - 31µm in diameter with thickened walls, lumina containing prisms of calcium oxalate about 8µm in diameter. Stone cells of testa yellow or pale-brown, elongated polygonal, rectangular or irregular in shape, 60 - 112µm in diameter up to 230µm long with large pitted and thickened walls and brownish red lumina. Clusters of calcium oxalate 19 - 34µm in diameter.2.Heat 0.2g of the powder in 5ml of water on a water bath for 3 minutes and filter. Evaporate 5 drops of filtrate to dryhness in an evaporating dish. To the residue add 1 drop of sulfuric acid, a bluish green color is produced which turn to brown rapidly then to a purplish brown colour.3.Macerate 1g of the powder in 10ml of 75% ethanol on a warm water bath for 2 hours, filter and use the filtrate as the test solution. Dissolve jasminoidin CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 4mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silca gel G as the coating substance and ethyl- acetate- acetone- formic acid- water (5:5:1:1) as the mobile phase. Apply bseparately to nthe plate 5µl of each of the two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air. Spray with sulfuric acid solution (5?10) in ethanol, heat at 110ºC for about 10 minutes. The spots in the chromatogram ontained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solutionTotal ash: Not more than 6.0%

Processing  :

Action  : To reduce fire and ease the mind, to eliminate damp-heat, and to remove heat from blood and counteract toxicity. Fructus Gardeniae (charred): to arrest bleeding by removing heat from blood.

Indication  : febrile diseases with restlessness; jaundice with dark urine; hamaturia with difficult painful urination; hemoptysis and epistaxis caused by heat in the blood; inflammation of the eye; boils and sores external: sprains and bruises charred: hemoptysis, epistaxis, hematuria and abnormal uterine bleeding caused by heat in the blood

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 9 g; for external use, appropritae quantity of unprocessed fruit to be ground into powder and applies topically after mixed with a liquid.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
