Collection  : The stem is incised from the upper part to the lower part at the flowering and fruiting stage in the end of spring and early summer. The exuding emulsive resin is collected and dried in the shade.

Description  : Irregular lumps or resinous substance, color varying in intensity, externally waxy yellow to brownish yellow. Lumps light, texture waxy, fracture somewhat pored, freshly cut surface pale, gradually darken on storage. Resinous substance viscid, greyish white, odor strongly and lastingly characteristic and alliaceous, taste pungent with a burning sensation on chewing.

Identification  : 1.Dissolve small quantity in a few drops of sulfuric acid, a yellowish brown to reddish brown color is produced. Add ammonia TS to make the solution alkaline and examine under ultra violet light (365 nm) a light blue fluorescence is produced.2.To small quantity add 0.5 ml of hydrochloric acid and boil, a pale yellowish brown or pale purplish red colour is produced. Add a small quantity of phloroglucinol, the color becomes pale, continue to boil, a purplish brown color is produced.3.Add 1 drop of nitric acid on the freshly cut surface, a green color is produced which changes gradually to yellowish brown color.4.Place 0.2 g in a 10 ml graduated test tube, add dehydrated ethanol to volume, grind, macerate for 30 minutes and filter. Transfer 0.2 ml of the filtrate to 50 ml volumetric flask, add dehydrated ethanol to volume and mix well. The light absorption of the resulting solution exhibit a maximum at 323 nm (Appendix V A). Total ash: Not more than 7.0% (Appendix V A)Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix ll D), using 5 - 10g. It contains not less than 10.0% of volatile oil.

Processing  :

Action  : To remove food stagnancy, to disintegrate masses.

Indication  : stagnationn of undigested meat, mass in the abdomen due to blood stasis, abdominal pain due to intestinal parasitosis

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 1 to 1.5 g.

Storage  : Preserve in well closed containers, stored in a cool and dry place.
