Euphorbia lathyris in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Qianjinzi

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Caper Euphorbia Seed

Specific Name  : Semen euphorbiae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in summer and autumn when the fruit is ripe, removed from foreign matters and dried.

Description  : Ellipsoidal or ovoid, about 5 mm long, 4mm in diameter. Externally greyish brown with irregular reticulated wrinkles, greyish black in the dents of reticulated pits, forming fine spots. A longitudinally furrowed raphe occurring on one side, a protrudent chalaza at the apex, a linear raphe at the lower end and an almost white raised caruncle or its scar at the base. Testa thin and fragile, kernel white or yellowish white, oily. Slight odor and taste pungent.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Epidermal cells of testa undulated, outer wall relatively thickened containing brown contents. Hypodermis consisting of 1 - 3 layers of parenchymatous cells, the inner epidermis consisting of 1 layer of subsquare palisade cells, the inner part of lateral walls and inner walls thickened distinctly. Palisade cells of endotesta 1 row, brown, slender cylindrical with thickened and lignified walls, sometimes pits visible. Perisperm consisting of several layers of sub-square parenchymatous cells. Cells of endosperm sub-rounded, cells of cotyledons square or rectangular. All containing aleurone grains.2.To 2g of the powder in a Soxhlet's extractor add 80 ml of petroleum ether (30 - 60ºC). Heat under reflux on a water bath for 30 minutes and filter. To the residue add 80ml of ethanol, heat under reflux on a water bath for 1 hour, cool, filter, evaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 10ml of ethanol and use it at the test solution. Dissolve esculetin CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 1mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G containing sodium carbobexymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and toluene-ethyl acetate-formic acid (5: 4: 1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 5 µl of the test solution and 1 µl of the reference solution to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air. Examine under ultra violet light (365 nm). The bright bluish fluorescent spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matters, sift and wash clean, dry in the sun. Break into pieces before use.Semen Euphorbiae Pulveratum: Rub off the testa clean Semen Euphorbiae, wrap with a piece of paper. Bake until the fatty oil is expelled entirely, discard paper, cool, or pulverized the drug, wrap it with a piece of paper and bake by gently heat, remove the fatty oil by pressing then pulverize to fine powder.

Action  : To cause drastic purgation for treating edema, and eliminate blood stasis for treating masses.

Indication  : edema, retained fluid with abdominal extension, oliguria, constipation, amenorrhea due to blood stasis. External use for tinea, verrucae

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy or debility with loose bowels.

Dosage  : 1 to 2 g without shell and oil, usually made into pills or powder; for external use, appropriate quntity to be pounded into paste and applied topically.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, potected from moth.

Scientific Name:
Collection  :

Description  : Homogeneous and loose light yellow powder. Slightly oleaginous and taste pungent.

Identification  : Complies with Identification test (2) described under Semen Euphorbiae.Assay: Transfer 5g weighed accurately to a Soxhlet's extractor and 100 ml of ethanol and heat under reflux for 6 - 8 hours to exhaust fatty oil. Collect the extracts to an evaporating dish dried to constant weight and evaporate to dryness at a low temperature on a water bath. Dry it at 100ºC for 1 hour, allow to cool and weighed accurately. It contains not less than 19.0% _ 20.0% of fatty oils.

Processing  : Rub off the testa, carry out the method for frost like powder making (Appendix ll D) to make the frost like powder.

Action  : To cause drastic purgation for treating edema, and eliminate blood stasis for treating masses.

Indication  :

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy or debility with loose bowels.

Dosage  : 0.5 to 1 g, usually made into pills or powder for external use, appropriate quantity to be applied topically.
