Description  : A colorless or pale yellow clear liquid, odor characteristic, and aromatic resembling to camphor, taste pungent and cool, darkens slightly on long storage. Freely soluble in 70% ethanol.Relatively density: 0.895 - b0.920 ( Appendix Vll A)Refractive index: 1.458 - 1.468 (Appendix Vll F)

Identification  : Dissolve 0.1ml in dehydrated ethanol to make 1ml by shaking, use the solution as the test solution. Dissolve cineol CRS in the same manner. Use as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and cyclohexane-ethyl acetate (9.5:0.5) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 2µl of each of the solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air and spray with 1% solution of vanillin in sulfuric acid. The spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colou to the spot in the chromatogram obatined with the reference solution.Phellandrene: To 2.5 ml of the oil Add 12.5ml of petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC) skae well. Add 5ml of sodium nitrite solution (5Õ8) and then 5ml glacial acetic acid gradually and stir, no crystals are separated within ten minutes.Heavy metals: carry out the limit test for heavy metals (Appendix lX E, method 2), using 1g not more than 10 ppm.Assay: Carry out the determination of cineol (Appendix X C). It contains not less than 70% (g/g) of cineol (C10 H18 O).
