Collection  : The drug is collected all the year round, cut into section or piece and dried in the sun.

Description  : In oblique sections or pieces, 1-10cm in diameter, externally greyish yellow, greyish-brown or pale brown, slightly rough with shallow furrows and irregular longitudinal or turtle-like fissures. Lenticle spot like or protuberant-yellowish-white. Older cork exfoliated. Texture hard with relatively more fibers, uneasily broken, cut surface elliptical, yellowish brown or pale yellowish-brown, abnormal vascular bundles flowery or piece like vessel of xylem pitted. Odourless, taste weak.

Identification  : To 5g of the powder in a soxhlet's extractor add 40 ml of ethanol, allow to macerate overnight, extract under reflux for 6 hours, filter. To the filtrate add 6ml of hydrochloric acid (6mol/L) heat under reflux for 3 hours, evaporate to dryness on a water bath. Dissolve the residue in 10ml of ethanol and use it as the test solution. Dissolve scopoletin CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 0.25mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G containing sodium carboxymethylcellulose as the coating substance and cyclohexane-chloroform-ethyacetate-formic acid (6:10:7:1:2) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 3µl of each of the above two solutions to the plate, dry it in the air. Examine under ultra violet light (365nm), a bright bluish fluorescent spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in the position to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly cut to slices and dry in the sun.

Action  : To dispel wind and deprive dampness, reduce swelling, relieve pain.

Indication  : Rheumatic arthralgia, hemiplegia, traumatic swelling, pain

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 6 g, making tincture for oral administration or external application.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
