Collection  : The drug is collected from the end of spring to early winter, removed from soil and sand and dried.

Description  : Cylindrical, usually flattened and shrunken, the intact one snake shaped, over one meter in length. Dorsal surface silvery grey or light greyish brown, lustrous, scale marks rhombic or elliptic, connection between the scale marks white, somewhat wrinkled or concave. Ventral surface milky white or slightly yellow, scale marks rectangular, imbricate. Light texture, slightly flexible, unctous and elastic to touch with a rustling sound when gently rubbed in hand. Odour slightly stinking taste weak or slightly salty.Acid insoluble ash: Not more than 3.0% (appendix lX K)

Identification  :

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter and cut into sections.Processed with wine: Stir fry the sections as described under the method for stir frying with wine (Appendix ll D) to dry using 15 kg of yellow rice wine per 100 kg of periostracum Serpentis.

Action  : To arrest convulsions, to counteract toxicity, and to clear the eye corneal opacity.

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 2 to 3 g to be made into decoction, or 0.3 to 0.6 g to be ground into powder for oral administration.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from moth.
