Description  : Colorless, transparent or white, transluscent, loose and fragile, plate crystals, volatile, a heavy fume is produced on burning with a bright flame. Odor: delicate aromatic, taste: pungent and cool. Freely soluble in ethanol, chloroform or ether, practically insoluble in water.Melting point 205-210ºC

Identification  : 1.Dissolve about 10mg in several drops of ethanol, add 1-2 drops of freshly prepared 1% solution of vanillin in sulfuric acid, a purple color is produced immediately.2.3g add 10ml of nitric acid, reddish brown gas produced immediately. Add 20ml of water after the subsidence of the gas, mix well and filter, wash the residue with water, a smell resembling camphor is perceptible.PH Grind 2.5g to fine powder, shake well with 25ml of water and filter. Divide the fitrate into two portions of 10ml each. Add 2 drops of methyl red IS to one portion and 2 drops of phenolphthalein IS to another, the solutions are not red in color.Non-volatile matter: Evaporate 10g on a water bath in a weighed evaporating dish and dry at 105ºC to constant weight, not more than 3.5mg (0.035%).Water: Dissolve 1g in 10ml of petroleum ether with shaking, the solution is clear.Heavy metals: Dissolve 2g in 23ml of ethanol, add 2ml of the dilute acetic acid, carry out the limit test for heavy metals (Appendix lX E, method 1) not more than 5ppm.Arsenic: Mix well 1g with 0.5g of calcium hydroxide and 2ml of water, heat on a water bath, allow it to volatilize, cool. Neutralize with hydrochloric acid then add 5ml of hydrochloric acid and a quantity of water to make up the volume to 28ml. Carry out the limit test for arsenic (Appendix lX F) not more than 2ppm.

Action  : To restore consciousness, to remove heat, and to relieve pain.

Indication  :

Precautions  : Used with caution in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 0.15 to 0.3 g, used in preparation of pills or powder; for external use, appropriate quantity to be ground into powder and applied topically.

Storage  : Preserve in tightly closed containers, stored in a cool place.
