Collection : The drug is collected in autumn and winter, removed from fibrous root, washed clean, cut into slices and dried in the sun.
Description : Irregularly oblique slices,, border uneven, varying in size, about 2 - 5 mm thick, externally yellowish brown or brownish black, sparsely bearing remains of fibrous roots, protruding conically. Cut surface greyish white to pale greyish brown, Yellowish brown spots of vascular bundles scattered. Texture loose, somewhat spongy, odour slight, taste slightly bitter.
Identification : Powder: Pale yellowish brown, starch granules abundant, simple starch granules ovoid, ellipsoidal, sub spherical, triangular or irregular, some acute at one end, some knotty, 10 - 70 µm in diameter, hilum cleft like, V shaped, pointed, striations mostly indistinct. Needles of the calcium oxalate in bundles, 90 - 210 µm long. Parenchymatous cells polygonal, ellipsoid or rectangular, walls slightly thickened, pits distinct. Cork cells brownish yellow, polygonal, walls straight.
Processing :
Action : To remove turbid damp, and to relieve rheumatic conditions.
Indication : gonorrhea with whitish discharge from the urethra, excessive leukorrhea; ulcers caused by damp-heat; arthalgia of the lumbar spine and knees
Precautions :
Dosage : 9 to 15 g.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
