Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from rootlet, wash clean and dried in the sun.

Description  : Cylindrical, often twisted or branched, 9 - 15 cm long, 0.5 - 2 cm in diameter. Externally brownish yellow with fine longitudinal striations, the outer bark easily exfoliated, exposing pale yellow wood. Texture hard uneasily broken, dusting on breaking, transversely cut surface yellowish white, rays whitish, arranged relatively. Odorless and taste bitter.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Cork consisting of several layers of cells. Cortex narrow, a few cells containing resinous masses raphides of calcium oxalate. Phloem narrow, raphides of calcium oxalate numerous, cambium in irregular wavy ring. Xylem occupying the main part, completely lignified, rays varying in width, vessels polygonal, singly scattered or aggregated, some containing yellow tyloses. Parenchymatous cells containing starch granules.2.Heat under reflux 2 g of the powder with 10ml of 70% ethanol for 15 minutes, allow to cool and filter. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness, add 2 ml of 1% hydrochloric acid solution to the residue, stir and filter. To the filtate add 2 drops of potassium iodobismuthate TS, a brownish red precipitate is produced.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, grade according to size, soak in water, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry in the sun.

Action  : To stop malarial attacks.

Indication  : malaria

Precautions  : It causes vomiting as a side effect; overdosage should be avoided. Used with caution in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 5 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
