Historical Use of Cynanchum paniculatum
Cynanchum paniculatum in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Chinese Name (pinyin): Xuchangqing
Chinese Name :
Common Name :Paniculate Swallowwort Root
Specific Name : Radix cynanchi paniculati
Collection : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from foreign matter and dried in the shade.
Description : Rhizomes irregular cylindrical, knotty, 0.5 - 3.5 cm long, 2 - 4mm in diameter. Sometimes apex with remains of stem, slenderly cylindrical, about 2 cm long. 1 - 2mm in diameter, fractured hollowed. The nodes of rhizome surrounded by numerous roots. Roots slenderly cylindrical, curved, 10 - 16 cm long, 1 - 1.5 mm in diameter. Externally pale yellowish white to pale brownish yellow or brown with fine longitudinal wrinkles and fibrous roots. Texture fragile, easily broken, fracture starchy, bark whitish or yellowish white, cambium ring pale brown, wood small. Odour aromatic, taste pungent and cool.
Identification : 1.To 0.5g of the powder in a test tube add 2 ml of water. Cover the tubne mouth with filter paper, moistened with water. To the filter paper add small quantity of a mixture of one part of dichloroquinone chloroimide and 32 parts of sodium tetraborate. Heat the tube to boil gently, the filter becomes blue.2.To 1g of the powder add 10 ml of ether, stopper tightly, shake for 10 minutes and filter. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 1 ml of acetone as the test solution. Dissolve paeonol CRS in acetone to produce a solution containing 2 mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G as the coating substance and cyclohexane acetate (3:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 5 µl of the test solution and 10 µl of the reference solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air and spray with 5% solution of ferric chloride in ethanol acidified with hydrochloric acid. Visualize under a current of hot air. The bluish brown spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Assay: Steam distil about 0.3g of the powder, accurately weighed [performed a determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2)], collect about 450 ml of the distillate into a 500 ml volumetric flask, dilute with water to volume and mix well. Carry out the method for spectrophotometry (Appendix V A), measure the absorbance of the solution at 274 nm, calculate the content of C9H10O3, taking 862 as the value of a (1%, 1 cm). It contains not less than 1.3% of paeonol (C9H10O3), calculated on the dried basis.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean rapidly, cut into sections and dry in the shade.
Action : To relieve rheumatic conditions, and to arrest pain and itching.
Indication : rheumatic arthralgia, epigastric pain and distension, toothache, lumbago, traumatic injuries; urticaria, eczema
Dosage : 3 to 12 g, to be decocted for a short time only.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
