Collection : The drug is collected in autumn, wash clean and dried in the sun.
Description : Rhizome of Cynanchum stauntonii: Slenderly cylindrical, branched somewhat curved, 4 - 15 cm long, 1.5 - 4 mm in ddiameter, externally yellowish white or yellowish brown, obviously nodose, internodes 1.5 - 4.5 cm long, remains of stem at the apex. Texture fragile, fracture hollowed. Numerous fine curved root and rootlets fascicled at nodes up to 10 cm long, less than 1 mm in diameter, much branched and appearing hairy fibrous, usually coiled each other in a mass. Odour slight, taste sweetish.
Identification : Heat under reflux 1 g of the coarse powder with 10 ml of 70% ethanol for 1 hour and filter. Evaporate 1 ml of the filtrate to dryness, to the residue add 1 ml of acetic anhydride and 1 drop of sulfuric acid. A reddish violet colour is produced for Rhizoma Cynanchi Stauntonii which turns to green on standing, a brownish red color is produced for Rhizoma Cynanchi Galucescens which unchange on standing.Processing: Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into sections and dry.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into sections and dry.Processed with honey: Stir fry the clean Rhizoma Cynanchi Stauntonii as described under the method for stir frying with honey (Appendix ll D) until no more sticky to fingers.
Action : To eliminate phlegm and relieve cough.
Indication : cough with copious expectoration and dyspnea

Dosage : 3 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
