Collection  : The drug is collected in summer and autumn, removed from soft part, washe clean and dried in the sun.

Description  : Shell of Meretrix meretrix, fan like or subrounded, the dorsal margin somewhat triangular, the ventral margin arch-like, 3-10cm long, 2-8cm high. The umbo projected, located slightly near the front of the dorsal side. The outer surface smooth, yellowish brown, with distinct concentric growth lines, the dorsal part usually with serrated or undulated brown stripes. The inner surface white, no tooth-like stripes at the margin, the front and hind shell margins sometimes slightly purple, the hinge rather wide. The right shell with three cardinal teeth and two front lateral teeth and one front lateral tooth. Texture hard, fracture with laqminated stripes, odourless and taste weak.Shell of Cyclina sinensis: Sunrounded, the umbro projected, located near the middle of the dorsal side. The outer surface pale yellow 0r brownish-red, the concentric growth lines projected from the shell, somewhat like circular ribs. The inner surface white or pink, the margin often purple and with neat small tooth like stripes. Both the right and left shell with three cardinal teeth but no lateral tooth at the hinge.

Processing  : Meretricis seu Cyclinae, Wash clean, break to pieces and dry.(Calcined) Meretricis seu Cyclinae as describe under the method of calcining openly (Appendix ll B) until it becomes crisp.

Action  : To remove heat and resolve phlegm, to soften hard masses and eliminate nodulations, and to alleviate epigastric pain by inhibiting acid secretion.

Indication  : cough, chest pain and bloody sputum caused by heat in the lung; scrofula, goitre; epigastric pain associated with acid regurgitation external: eczema, scalds

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 15 g, to be decocted before other ingredients, and wrapped for making decoction if powdered concha is used; for external use, appropriate quantity to be ground into extremely fine powder and sprayed on the lesions or applied topically after mixing wi
