Externally greyish yellow to greyish brown, the upper part with conspicously raised annulated and rounded and slightly dented rootlet scars or remaining rootlets, some exhibiting a row concave bud scars and subrounded lateral rhizome scars on two sides, respectively and showing knife cut traces. Heavy, texture hard, fracture greyish brown or bluish brown, waxy, usually with greyish brown powdery, bark stele easily detachable, endodermal ring deep brown. Odour slight aromatic, taste slight bitter and pungent.Rhizome of curcuma kwangsiensis: Slightly raised annulated, fracture yellowish brown to brown, usually wioth pale yellow powdery, endodermal ring yellowish white.Rhizome of Curcuma wenyujin: Fracture yellowish brown to dark brown, usually with pale yellow to yellowish brown powdery. Odour aromatic or slightly aromatic.

Identification  : Transverse section: Cork consisting of several layers of cells, sometimes removed, cortex scattered with leaf trace bundles, endodermis distinct. Stele broad vascular bundles collateral and scattered, some of them relatively small along pericycle, relatively close arranged. Parenchymatous cells filled with gelatinous starch masses, some cells containing golden oily matter scattered in parenchyma.Absorbance: Weigh accurately 30 mg of the medium size powder (through No. 4 sieve), add 10 ml of chloroform, ultrasonicate for 40 minutes or macerate for 24 hours, filter in a 10 ml of volumetric flask, wash the residue with chloroform and dilute to volume and mix well. Carry out the method for spectrophotometry (Appendix V A), the resulting solution exhibits a maximum at 242 nm and the absorbance is not less than 0.45.Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix D). It contains not less than 1.5% of volatile oil (ml/g)

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, soak slightly, wash clean, steamed to be soft, cut into slices and dry.Processed with vinegar: Stir fry as described under the method for stir frying with vinegar (Appendix ll D), boil thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry.

Action  : To promote the flow of qi and eliminate blood stasis with strong effect, and to relieve pain by removing the stagnation of undigested food.

Indication  : mass in the abdomen, amenorrhea due to blood stasis; distension and pain due to stagnation of undigested food; early stage carcinoma of cervix

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 6 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from moth.

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Pianjianghuang

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :

Specific Name  : Rhizoma wenyujin concisum

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn when stem and leaf withered, wash clean, removed from fibrous root, cut into thick slice and dry in he sun.

Description  : Long rounded or irregularly sliced, varying in size, 3 - 6 cm long, 1 - 3 cm wide, 1 - 4 mm thick. The outer bark greyish yellow, rough and uneven with numerous annular nodes and fibrous root scars, transversely cut surface yellowish white to brownish yellow with an annular ring and numerous dotted vascular bundles. Texture hard and fragile, fracture greyish white to brownish yellow, somewhat starchy. Odor characteristic and aromatic, taste slightly bitter, pungent and cool.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Epidermal cells remained, outer walls slightly thickened. Cork consisting of more layers of cells. Cork consisting of more layers of cells. Cortex scattered with leaf trace vascular bundles, endodermis distinct. Stele large, vascular bundles collateral, relatively small and arrange densely. Some xylem with 1 or 2 vessels only, the center of the stele relatively large and accompanied by thin walled fibres. Parenchyma scattered with oil cells in cortex and stele. Parenchymatous cells containing starch granules.2.Shake 0.5g of the powder with 5 ml of petroleum ether for 5 minutes and filter. Spot the filtrate on a piece of filter paper, allow to dry briefly, add 1 drop of vanillin Ts, a cherry red color is produced.3.To 1 g of the powder add 5 ml of petroleum ether (30 - 60ºC), shake constantly about 30 minutes and filter. Add petroleum ether in the filtrate to 5 ml, use as the test solution. Prepare a solution of 1 g of Rhizoma Wenyujin Concisa reference drug in the same manner as the reference drug solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G as the coating substance and petroleum ether (30 - 60ºC-ethyl acetate (85:15) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 2 µl of each of the two solutions to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with 1% solution of vanilin in sulfuric acid, heat at 100ºC for several minutes until spots appear distinctly. The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Processing  :

Action  : To eliminate blood stasis, promote the flow of qi, stimulate the menstrual discharge and relieve pain.

Indication  :

Precautions  : Used with caution in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, protected from moth.
