Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Curcuma Root

Specific Name  : Radix curcumae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in winter when stem and leaves wither, removed from soil and rootlets, steamed or boiled thoroughly and dried.

Description  : Wen Yujin: Oblong or ovoid, slightly compressed or curved, the two ends tapering, 3.5 - 7 cm long, 1.2 - 2.5 cm in diameter. Externally pale brown or greyish brown with irregular longitudinal wrinkles, the raised longitudinal wrinkles pale in colour. Texture compact fracture greyish brown and horny. Endodermis ring distinct. Odour slightly aromatic, taste slightly bitter. Huang Si Yujin: Fusiform, sometimes slender at one end. 2.5 - 4.5 cm long, 1 - 1.8 cm in diameter, externally brownish grey or greyish yellow with fine wrinkles. Fracture orange but edges brownish yellow to brownish red. Odour aromatic, taste pungent.Gui Yujin: Long conical or oblong. 2 - 6.5 cm long, 1 - 1.8 cm in diameter. Externally with sparse and shallow wrinkles or relatively coarse reticulate wrinkles. Odour slight, taste slightly pungent and bitter.LüSi Yujin: Long ellipsoid rather stout, 1.5 - 3.5cm long, 1 - 1.2 cm in diameter. Odour slight, taste weak.

Identification  : Transverse sectionWen Yujin: Epidermal cells sometimes remaining, the outer walls slightly thickened. Velamen narrow, composed of 4 - 8 layers of cells with slightly sinous and thin walls regularly arranged. Cortex ½ as wide as the diameter of the root, oil cells poorly visible, endodermis distinct. In stele, phloem bundle and xylem bundles 40 - 55 respectively, vessels 2 - 4 in xylem bundle and xylem fibres slightly lignified. Vessels polygonal thin walled, 20 - 90µm in diameter. All starch granules in parenchymatous cells gelatinized.Huang Si Yujin: The walls of the inner most layer of velamen thickened. Sometimes xylem vessels and fibres arranged in a continuous ring, oil cells numerous, pigment cells scattered throughout parenchyma.Gui Yujin: The walls of velamen occasionally thickened, the inner side of velamen showing 1 - 2 rows of sclerenchymatous cells arranged in a ring with distinct striations. Vessels subrounded up to 160µm in diameter.Lü Yujin: The cells of velamen not thickened. At the outside of the stele cortex frequently exhibiting pigment cells. Phloem bundle shriveled, xylem bundles more, 64 - 72 vessels flattened.Water: Carry out the determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2) not more than 15.0%.Total ash: Not more than 9.0%

Processing  : Wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry, or wash clean, dry, and then break to pieces.

Cuezhu ´×ÝÊõ Pengezhu ÅîÝÊõ Chinese Name (pinyin): Ezhu

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Zodoary

Specific Name  : Rhizoma curcumae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in winter when the aerial part wither, washed clean, steamed or boiled thoroughly, dried in the sun or dried at a low temperature, remove from fibrous root and foreign matter.

Description  : Rhizome of curcuma phaeocaulis: Ovoid, elongate ovaoid, conical or elongate fusiform, frequently apex obtuse and rounded, 2 - 8 cm long, 1.5 - 4 cm in diameter. Externally greyish yellow to greyish brown, the upper part with conspicously raised annulated and rounded and slightly dented rootlet scars or remaining rootlets, some exhibiting a row concave bud scars and subrounded lateral rhizome scars on two sides, respectively and showing knife cut traces. Heavy, texture hard, fracture greyish brown or bluish brown, waxy, usually with greyish brown powdery, bark stele easily detachable, endodermal ring deep brown. Odour slight aromatic, taste slight bitter and pungent.Rhizome of curcuma kwangsiensis: Slightly raised annulated, fracture yellowish brown to brown, usually wioth pale yellow powdery, endodermal ring yellowish white.Rhizome of Curcuma wenyujin: Fracture yellowish brown to dark brown, usually with pale yellow to yellowish brown powdery. Odour aromatic or slightly aromatic.

Identification  : Transverse section: Cork consisting of several layers of cells, sometimes removed, cortex scattered with leaf trace bundles, endodermis distinct. Stele broad vascular bundles collateral and scattered, some of them relatively small along pericycle, relatively close arranged. Parenchymatous cells filled with gelatinous starch masses, some cells containing golden oily matter scattered in parenchyma.Absorbance: Weigh accurately 30 mg of the medium size powder (through No. 4 sieve), add 10 ml of chloroform, ultrasonicate for 40 minutes or macerate for 24 hours, filter in a 10 ml of volumetric flask, wash the residue with chloroform and dilute to volume and mix well. Carry out the method for spectrophotometry (Appendix V A), the resulting solution exhibits a maximum at 242 nm and the absorbance is not less than 0.45.Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix D). It contains not less than 1.5% of volatile oil (ml/g)

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, soak slightly, wash clean, steamed to be soft, cut into slices and dry.Processed with vinegar: Stir fry as described under the method for stir frying with vinegar (Appendix ll D), boil thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry.

Action  : To promote the flow of qi and eliminate blood stasis with strong effect, and to relieve pain by removing the stagnation of undigested food.

Indication  : mass in the abdomen, amenorrhea due to blood stasis; distension and pain due to stagnation of undigested food; early stage carcinoma of cervix

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 6 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from moth.
