Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn and summer, removed from mud and sand and dried in the sun.

Description  : Slightly ellipsoidal and curved, about 3.5cm long, 2cm wide. The outer surface yellowish brown, translucent, lustrous. The head with a pair of filiform antennae, usually dropped, compound eyes projected. The anterior end of the frons projected, mouth and snout develops, labium short and wide, labium short and wide, labium extended into a tube. The dorsal surface of the thorax with a cross split of inward curved margin. Each side of the dorsum bears two small wings. The ventral surface bears three pairs of leg, covered with yellowish brown minute hairs. The abdomen obtuse round, 9 segments, light hollowed, fragile, odourless and taste slight.

Identification  :

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean and dry in the sun.

Action  : To dispel wind-heat, to soothe sore throat, to promote eruption, to clear the eye if corneal opacity, and to arrest spasm.

Indication  : upper respiratory tract infection with sore throat, hoarseness, measles with inadequate eruption; urticaria with itching; inflammation of the eye with formation of corneal opacity; convulsion, tetanus

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 6 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from pressure.
