Historical Use of Corydalis decumbens

Corydalis decumbens in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Xiatianwu

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Decumbent Corydalis Rhizome

Specific Name  : Rhizoma corydalis decumbentis

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in spring or early summer after budding, removed from stem, leaf and rootlet, washed clean and dried.

Description  : In sub spheroidal, long rounded or irregular masses, 0.5 - 3 cm long, 0.5 - 2.5 cm in diameter. Externally greyish yellow, dark green or dark brown with numerous tubercles and indistinct fine wrinkles. Apex obtuse rounded and showing scars of stems, surrounded by numerous pale yellow dotted leaf scars and rootlet scars. Texture hard, fracture yellowish white or yellow., granular or horny, sometimes somewhat starchy, odourless, taste bitter.

Identification  : 1.Macerate 4 g of the coarse powder in 25 ml of 1% solution of sodium carbonate on a nearly boiling water bath for 5 minutes and filter. Adjust the filtrate to pH 6 with dilute hydrochloric acid TS and extract with 15 ml of chloroform. To 2 ml of the chloroform solution add 1 ml of sulfuric acid and shake. The sulfuric acid layer shows a brownish red color and turns to brownish black on standing.2.Ultrasonicate about 4g of the powder with 40 ml mixture of chloroform-methanol-concentrated ammonia TS (5:1:0.1) for 30 minutes, filter and evbaaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 2 ml of methanol as the test solution. Dissolve protopine CRS in chloroform to produce a solution containing 2 mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and cyclohexane-ethyl acetate-deithylamine (80:15:5) as the mobile phase, pre saturated for 15 minutes. Apply separately to the plate 5 ml each of the two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, spray with dilute potassium iodobismuthate TS. The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Processing  :

Action  : To promote the flow of qi and blood, to remove obstrution from the collaterals and to relieve pain.

Indication  : hemiplegia, sequelae of infantile paralysis; sciatica, rheumatic arthritis; traumatic injuries

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g, to be ground into powder and divided into 3 doses.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
