Collection  : The drug is boiled with water, remove from bony plug and dried.

Description  : Somewhat flattened and curved conical, varying in length. The surface brownish-black or greyish-black with several transverse grooves on one side and densely transverse depressed stripes on the other side. The upper part gradually pointed with longitudinal stripes, the basal part somewhat triangular, hollowed. Texture horny, hard, odour slightly stinky and taste weak.Identification: Powder greyish brown, Irregular broken pieces pale greyish yellow. In longitudinal section, slender spindle shaped striations with longtudinal long slits and minute greyish brown pigment granules visible, In transverse section, spindle shaped striations parallely arranged, wave with many yellowish-brown pigment granules. The surface of some broken pieces relatively even, pigment granules and slit less, poorly visible.

Action  : To remove toxic heat, to reduce heat in blood, and to arrest convulsions.

Indication  : high fever, delirium and eruptions epidemic diseases; spitting of blood, epistaxis; convulsions and mania

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 15 to 30 g, to be decocted for more than 3 hours before other ingredients.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould.

Scientific Name:
Collection  : Procedure: Take Cornu Bubali, wash clean, cut with a saw, eliminate the bony plug, split into small pieces. Select the solid tip part, which is commonly known as "jiaojian" (horn tip). Immerse in 70% ethanol or sterilize with a steam the pulverized to fine powder. Break the rest, which is commonly known as "Jiaozhuang" (horn stake) to coarse granules or thin slices. Decoct 810g of the coarse granules or slices of the horn stake with 10 times of water twice for 7 - 10 hours each time. Supplement the evaporated water during decocting. Combine the decoction and filter. Concentrate the filtrate to 80 - 160ml. Add 190g of the fine powder of horn tip, mix well, dry below 80ºC, pulverize to fine powder and sift.

Description  : Pale greyish powder, odour slightly stinking, taste slightly salty.Water: Carry out the method for determination of water (Appendix lX H, method1) not more than 11.0%.
