Clematis montana in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Chuanmutong

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Armand clematis stem

Specific Name  : Caulis cllematidis armandii

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in the spring and autumn, removed from the coarse bark and dried in the sun or cut into thin slices when fresh and dried in the sun.

Description  : long cylindrical, slightly twisted, 50-100 cm long, 2-3.5cm in diameter, externally yellowish-brown with longitudinal cracks and ridges. Nodes usually swollen, with leaf scars and branches scars. The remained bark easily torn, texture hard, uneasily broken, the slices 2-4mm thick, uneven on margin, the remained bark yellowish-brown, wood yellowish brown with yellowish white radial striations and cracks and densely scattered vessel pit. Pit relatively small, whitish or yellowish brown, occasionally hollowed, odourless, taste weak.

Identification  : Macerate 1g of the powder in 10ml of ethanol for 1 hour. Hewat for 3 minutes and allow to cool, filter. Evaporate 0.5ml of the filtrate on a evaporating dish to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 2 drops of 2% phosphmolybdic acid solution and add 1 drop of concentrated ammonia TS, a blue colour is produced.

Processing  : soak briefly, moisten thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry in the sun.

Action  : To remove heat and induce diuresis, to stimulate menstural discharge, and promote lactation.

Indication  : edema, oliguria, arthralgia, amenorrhea, lack of lactation

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 6 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moth.
