Externally greyish yellow or pale brown with lenticels and sparse rootlet scars. Texture hard and fragile, easily broken, softened when moistened, fracture even, yellowish brown, slightly horny and oily. Xylem of vascular bundles in the center relatively yellowish white, outside scattered with many spotted vascular bundles arranged in 2 - 4 whorls. Parenchymatous cells containing sand crystal of calcium oxalate.2.To 2 g of the powder add 20 ml of ethanol, heat under reflux for 40 minutes and allow to stand. To 10 ml of the supernatant liquid add 1ml of hydrochloric acid, heat under reflux for 1 hour, concentrate to about 5 ml, add 10 ml of water, extract with 20 ml of petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC). Evaporate the extract to dryness, dissolve the residue in 2 ml of ethanol as the test solution. Dissolve oleanolic acid CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 1 mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel H containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and chloroform-methanol (40:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 10 - 20µl of the test solution and 10µl of the reference solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it iin the air, spray with phosphomolybdic acid TS and heat at 110ºC for about 10 minutes. The blue spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Total ash; Not more than 90%
