Description  : A pale yellow, clear liquid. Freely soluble in chloroform, ether or carbon bisulfite and slightly soluble in ethanol.Relative density: 0.909 - 0.915 at 25ºC (Appendix Vll A)Refractive index: 1.466 - 1.470 at 25ºC (Appendix Vll F)Acid value: Not more than 3 (Appendix lX N)Saponification value: 185 - 196 (Appendix lX N)Iodine value: 80 - 88 (Appendix lX N)

Identification  : Add 2ml of the oil carefully to 10ml of cool, freshly prepared fuming nitric acid sulfuric acid- water (1:1:1) allow to stand for a moment, a bluish green color is produced between two layers.Tung oil: Dissolve 3ml of the oil in 3ml of petroleum ether to form a clear liquid. Add a small quantity of sodium nitrite crystal and several drops of dilute sulfuric acid, bubbles are produced immediately, shake strongly, allow to stand, the oil layer is clear an there is no turbidity at the junction of oil layer and acid layer.Cotton seed oil: Measure 5ml of oil to a test tube. Add 5ml of a mixture containing equal volumes of sulfur in carbon disulfide solution (1Õ100) and amyl alcohol, heat carefully on a saturated saline bath until the bubbles stop (remove from carbon disulfide), continue to heat on a boiling water bath, a red color should not be produced within two hours.
