Collection : The drug is collected mostly in autumn, remove from the white sap wood and dried.
Description : Long cylindrical or half cylindrical owing to cutting lengthwise, 10 - 100cm long, 3 - 12cm in diameter. Externally yellowish red to brownish red with knife cutting traces and branch scars usually showing some longitudinal cracks. Transversely cut surface somewhat lustrous, annual rings distinct, sometimes dark brown, loose and bright dotted pith visible. Texture hard, odourless, taste astringent.
Identification : 1.To a piece of the drug add the solution of calcium hydroxide, a deep red colour is produced.2.Transverse section: Rays 1 - 2 rows of cells wide, vessels subrounded up to about 160µm in diameter, usually containing yellowish brown or reddish brown contents. Wood fibres mostly polygonal with heavily thickened walls. Parenchymatous cells in xylem thick walled, lignified some containing prisms of calcium oxalate. Parenchymatous cells in pith irregularly polygonal, varying in size, walls slightly lignified and pitted.3.To 10g of the powder add 50ml of water, shake and stand for 4 hours. Filter, an orange red colour is produced and a yellowish green is produced under ultra violet light (365nm) To 5ml of the filtrate add 2 drops of sodium hydroxide TS, a scarlet colour is produce, a blue fluorescence is produced under ultra violet light (365nm). The solution becomes orange color on acidifying with hydrochloric acid shows a yellowish green fluorescence under ultra violet light (365nm)
Processing : Saw into sections about 3cm long, then split to pieces or pulverized to coarse powder.
Action : To promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, and to cause subsidence of swelling and relieve pain.
Indication : amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, blood stasis after delivery; prickien pain in the chest and abdomen, traumatic swelling and pain
Precautions : Used with caution in pregnancy.
Dosage : 3 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place.
