Historical Use of Bergenia pupurascens

Bergenia pupurascens in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Yanbaicaisu

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Bergenin

Specific Name  : Bergeninum

Scientific Name:
Collection  :

Description  : White, loosen needle crystalline powder, odorless, taste: bitter gradually discolors on exposure to light and heat. Soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in water and ethanol.Melting range: 232-240ºC dried previously at 130ºC (Appendix Vll C).Specific optical rotation: -38º to -45º in a solution of 20mg per ml in methanol, calculated on the dried basis (Appendix Vll E).

Identification  : 1.Heat to dissolve about 50mg in 10 ml of water and cool. 1ml of the solution and add 2 drops of potassium ferricyanide TS containing 1 drop of ferric chloride TS per ml, an emerald green color is produced and changes to blue color.2.Dissolve 5mg in 1ml of methanol add several drops of 7% hydroxyamine hydrochloride solution in methanol, adjust alkaline with 10% solution of potassium hydroxide in methanol, heat to boil gently and allow to cool, acidify with dilute hydrochloric acid. Add 1 - 2 drops of 1% of ferric chloride solution in ethanol, purplish -red color is produced.3.The light absorption of the solution obtained in Assay, exhibits maxima at 275nm and 220nm (Appendix V A).Loss on drying: When dried to constant weight at 130ºC, loses not more than 6.0% of its weight (Appendix lX G).Residue on ignition: Not more than 0.1% (Appendix lX J).Assay: Place about 20mg, accurately weighed in a 50ml voolumetric flask, add ethanol to volume and mix well. Measure accurately 1ml of the solution to 25ml volumetric flask, add methanol to volume and mix well. Carry out the method of spectrophotometry (Appendix V A), measure the absorbance of 275nm, calculate the content of (C14H16O9), taking 248 as the value of A(1%, 1cm). It contains not less than 97.0% and not more than 103.0% of bergenin (C14H16O9), calculated on the dried basis.

Processing  :

Action  : Antitussive and expectorant.

Indication  : chronic bronchitis

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 0.125 g, three times a day.

Storage  : Preserve in well closed containers, protected from light.
