Common Name  :Cochinchinese Asparagus Root

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn and winter, washed clean, removed from stem remains rootlets, boiled or steamed until the centre of the drug is devoid of a white spot peeled while hot, washed clean and then dried.

Description  : Long fusiform, somewhat curved, 5 - 18 cm long, 0.5 - 2 cm in diameter. Externally yellowish white to yellowish brown, translucent, smooth or with deep and shallow longitudinal wrinkles, patches of outer peel in greyish brown colour occasionally found. Texture hard or tough and sleek, mucilaginous, fracture horny, stele yellowish white. Odour slight, taste sweet and slightly bitter.

Identification  : Transverse section: Sometimes with remains of velamen. Cortex broad with stone cells on the outer part, stone cells pale yellowish brown, elongated-rectangular, long elliptical or subrounded. 32 - 110µm in diameter, walls thickened with very fine close pits and pit canals, some of them arranged in an interrupted ring. Mucilage cells scattered, raphides of calcium oxalate occurring in elliptical mucilage cells. 40 - 99 µm long. Endodermis distively, arranged alternately, showing a few vessels developing towards the pith. Pith cells also containing raphides.Water: Not more than 16.0% (Appendix lX H, method 1).Extractives: Carry out the hot extraction method described under the determination of ethanol-soluble extractives (Appendix X A), using 50% ethanol as the solvent. Not less than 80.0%.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean rapidly, cut into thin slices and dry.

Action  : To replenish yin, promote fluid secretion and moisten the lung.

Indication  : dryness of the lung with dry cough, paroxysmal cough with dry sputum, dry throat, thirst, and constipation

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated dry place, protected from moulds.
