Collection : The drug is collected at the fruiting stage in summer or in early autumn, remove from adhering soil and dried in the shade.
Description : Herb of Asarum heterotropoides var. mandshuricum: usually rolled into a loose mass. Rhizomes of horizontal growth irregularly cylindrical, short branced, 1 --10cm long, 2 - 4mm in diameter, externally greyish brown, rough with ringed nodes, internodes 2 - 3mm long, marked with dish like stem scar at the top of a branch. Roots slender, closely born at nodes, 10 - 20cm long, 1mm in diameter, externally greyish-yellow, smooth or longitudinally wrinkled with fibrous roots or scars. Basal leaves 1 - 3 long petioled, surface glabrous, lamina mostly broken, the whole ones cordate to reniform-corrdate, margins entire, acute at the apex and deeply cordate at the base, 4 - 10cm long, 6 - 12cm wide, surface pale green. Some with flowers mostly crumpled, campanulate, dark purple, perianth-lobes incurved at the base and almost appressed to the perianth tube. Fruit hemigloboid, odour pungent-aromatic, taste pungent with tongue -numbing feeling. The rhizomes of the cultivated forms much-branched, 5 - 15cm long, 2 - 6mm in diameter. Roots 15 - 40cm long, 1 - 2mm in diameter, more leaves present.
Identification : Foreign matter: Not more than 1% (Appendix lX A)Tootal ash: Not more than 12.0% (Appendix lX K)Assay: Carry out the method for the determination of volatile oil (Appendix X D). It contains not less than 2.0% (ml/g) of volatile oil.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, spray a quantity of water, soften briefly, cut into sections and dry in the shade.
Action : To dispel wind-cold, to relieve nasal obstruction, to alleviate pain and to remove retained fluid.
Indication : common cold, headache, toothache; sinusitis with nasal obstruction; rheumatic arthralgia; cough and dyspnea due to retention of phlegm and fluid
Precautions : Incompatible with Rhizome et Radix Verstri.
Dosage : 1 to 3 g; appropriate quantity for external use.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
