Scientific Name:
Collection  : The infructescence in collected in autumn when ripe and ried in the sun. The fruit is tapped out, remove from foreign matter and dried again in the sun.

Description  : Long oboate, slightly flatytened, 5 - 7mm long, 2 - 3mm wide. Externally greyish brown, purplish black mottled with several longitudinal ribs, usually 1 - 2 middle ribs relatively distinct. Summit obtuse-rounded, slightly broad with a circular ring at the top and pointed remained of style in the center, base slightly narrowed, bearing the surface pale in color. Pericarp relatively hard, cotyledons 2, yellowish white, oily odorless, Taste bitter, slightly pungent and numb.

Identification  : 1.Powder: Greyish brown. Stone cells of endocarp slightly flattened, tapering fusiform, long elliptical or tapering ovate, closely mosaic in surface view, subrectangular or elongated, slightly curved in lateral view 70 - 224µm long, 13 - 70µm wide, the walls up to 20µm thick, lignified with transversely elongated pits. Reticulate cells of mesocarp polygonal in transverse sectional view, anticlinal walls spotted thickened, cells elongated in longitudinal sectional view the walls with fine and dense crisscross striations. Prisms of calcium oxalate 3 - 9µm in diameter, occurring abundantly in yellow parenchymatous cells of mesocarp, borders of crystal cells indistinct. Cells of cotelydons filled with aleurone grains, some containing small clusters and oil droplets.2.Examine a small quantity of the powder under ultra violet light (365nm), a green fluorescence is shown.Total ash : not more than 7.0% (Appendix lX K).Acid-insoluble ash: not more than 2.0%

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash and dry. Break to pieces before use.Stri fried: stir fry the clean Fructus Arctii as describe under the method for stir frying (Appendix ll D) until it becomes inflated and slightly scented. Break to pieces before use.

Action  : To dispel wind-heat and relieve cough, to promote eruption, to counteract toxicity, and to soothe sore throat.

Indication  : cough and expectoration in influenza or upper respiratory tract infection; measles; rubella; sore throat; mumps; erysipelas; carbuncles and sores

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
