Chunsharen ´ºÉ°ÈÊ Suosharen ËõÉ°ÈÊ Yangchunsha Ñô´ºÉ° Chinese Name (pinyin): Sharen

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Amomum Fruit

Specific Name  : Fructus amomi

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected between summer and autumn when ripe, dried in the sun or at low temperature

Description  : Description: Fruit of amomum villosum and amomum villosum var, xanthioides, ellipsoidal or ovaid, indistinctly 3 ridged, 1.5 - 2cm long, 1 - 1.5cm in diameter. Externally brown densely covered with spiny protrudings, apex with remains of perianth and base often bearing a fruit stalk. Pericarp thin and soft. Seeds agglutinated into a mass, 3 ridged obtusely, divided into 3 groups by white septa and each group containing 5 - 26 seeds. Seeds irregularly plyhedral, 2 - 3mm in diameter, externally brownish red or dark brown, finely wrinkled, covered with pale brown membranous aril. Texture hard, endosperm greyich white, odor strongly aronmatic, taste pungent cool and slightly bitter.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section of seed of Fructus Amomum villosum: Sometimes remains of aril present. Epidermal cells of testa 1 row, radially elongated, slightly thick walled, hypodermal cells 1 row, containing brown or reddish brown contents. Oil cells in 1 row 76 - 106µm long, 16 - 25µm wide, containing yellow oil droplets. Pigment layer consisting of several rows of brown cells, plygonal and irregular arranged. Endotesta consisting of 1 row of palisade like thoick wall cells, yellowish brown, small with heavily thickened inner lateral walls containing silica body. Cells of perisperm containing starch granules and a few fine prisms of calcium oxalate. Cells of endosperm containing small aleurone grains and fatty oil droplets. Powder: greyish brown, thick walled cells of edoteota reddish brown or yellow brown, polygonal n surface view with thickened and non-lignified walls, lumen contianing silica body, showing 1 row of palisade cells in section view with heavily thickened inner and lateral walls, lumen inclined to the outer sideand containing a silica body. Epidermal cells of testa pale yellow, stripe shaped in surface view, usually vertically arranged with hypodermal cells in an upper and lower layered pattern, hypodermal cells containing brown or reddish brown contents. Cells of pigment layer shrivelled with indistinct border, containing reddish brown or dark brown contents. Cells of perisperm subrectangular, filled with starch masses form by aggregation of small starch granules, some containing small prisms of calcium oxalate. Cells of endosperm containing minute aleurone grains and fatty oil droplets, oil cells colorless thin walled and scattered with oil droplets occasionally.2.Dissolve th volatile oil obtained under the Assay in ethanol to produce a solution containing 20µl per ml as the test solution. Dissolve bornyl acetate CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 10µl per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and cylohexane-ethyl acetate (22:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 1µl of each of the two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with 5% solution of vanillin in sulfuric acid, heat for several minutes and examine. A purplish red spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Water: Carry out the method for determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2) not more than 15.0%Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil ( Appendix X D)Masses of seeds of Amomum Villosum contain not less than 3.0% of volatile noil (ml/g). Masses of seeds of Amomum Longiligulare contain not less than 1.0% of volatile oil (ml/g).

Processing  :

Action  : To eliminate damp and improve appetite, to warm the spleen and check diarrhea, and to prevent abortion.
