Collection  : The drug is collected in summer and autumn, open in the abdomen, removed from the viscera, washed clean, held open with bamboo piece, coiled up in disc shape. The bamboo piece is removed after dried.

Description  : In coiled up disc, 17-34cm in diameter, the viper body up to 2m long. The head located in the center of the disc, slightly upward, triangular and flattened, tip of the snout upward, commonly known as "upward nose (qiaobitou)". Upper Jaw with tubular fangs, sharp and hallow, with 17-25 V-shaped stripe patterns, alternated blackish brown in each side of the dorsum. The upper ends of the "V" stripe patterns of both sides contacting at the mid-dorsal line forming a square stripe pattern, commonly known as "Fangshenwen". Some of the "V" stripe patterns alternating with those of the opposite side, asymmetrical. The abdomen open or not, greyish white. Scales relatively large with black subrounded spots, commonly known as "string or stripe pattern (Lianzhupan)". The inner wall of the abdomen, yellowish-white, the spinous process of the vertebrae relatively high, projected upward in the shape of a blade, anterior and posterior hypapophysis basically alike, mostly falcate, inclined posteriorly, tip obviously beyond the convex hind surface of the centrum. The tail tapered abruptly with one dark- grey triangular horny scale at the end. Odour, stinky, taste slightly salty.

Identification  :

Processing  : Remove the head and scales cut into section of about 3cm long. Agkistrodon flesh: Remove the head, soften thoroughly with yellow rice wine, eliminate the scales and bones and dry.Agkistrodon (process with wine): Stir-fry the agkistrodon sections with yellow rice wine as describe under the method of stir-frying with wine (Appendix 11D) to dryness, using 20kg of yellow rice per 100 kg of agkistrodon.Action: To dispel wind, to remove obstruction of channels and colaterlas and to arrest pain

Action  : To dispel wind, to remove obstruction of channels and collaterals, and to arrest spasm.

Indication  : chronic rheumatic or rheumatoid arthritis with numbness and contracture; hemiplegia in stroke; convulsion, tetanus; leprosy, scabies, ringworm

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g; 1 to 1.5 g to be ground into powder and taken with water.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould and moth.
