Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn and winter, removed from fibrous root and soil and dried in the sun.

Description  : Compressed cylindrical frequently tortous often branched, 3 - 20 cm long, 0.3 - 1 cm in diameter. Externally brown or greyish brown, rough with uneven annulations, inter nodes 2 - 8 mm long with fine longitudinal wrinkles. One surface with remains of fibrous root scars, leaf scars triangular, arranged alternately, some with hair like and scaly remains of leaf bases. Texture hard, fracture fibrous, whitish or reddish, an endodermis ring distinct, numerous dotted vascular bundles and brown oil cells visible. Odour aromatic, taste bitter and slightly pungent.

Identification  : Transverse section: Epidermal cells with thickened outer walls, brown , some containing reddish brown contents. Cortex broad, scattered with fibre bundles and collateral leaf trace bundles and each surrounded by a bundle sheath of lignified fibres. Endodermis distinct, amphivasal or collateral vascular bundles scattered throughout the stele with less fibrous bundle sheath. Fibre bundles and bundle sheaths surrounded by cells containing prisms of calcium oxalate, forming crystal fibres. Parenchyma scattered with sub rounded cells and containing starch granules.Total ash: Not more than 10.0% (Appendix lX K)Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix X A). It contains not less then 1.0% (ml/g) of volatile oil

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften, cut into thick slices and dry.

Action  : To eliminate damp and phlegm, to improve apprtite, nd to restore consciousness and benefit the mentality.

Indication  : feeling of fullness in the epigastrium with anorexia; severe case of dysentery with total loss of appetite; impairment of consciousness in epilepsy; forgetfulness and impaired hearing

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould.
