Collection  : The drug is collected in winter when the aerial part is withered, removed from rootlets and soil, tied up in small bundles, sundried to wrinkling externally, fumigated with sulphur twice, cut evenly at the summit and then dried thoroughly

Description  : Slender cylindrical, some slightly curved, the upper part slightly wider in diameter than the lower part, usually 15 - 50 cm long and up to 90 cm, 0.4 - 1 in diameter. Externally greyish yellow or pale brown with lenticels and sparse rootlet scars. Texture hard and fragile, easily broken, softened when moistened, fracture even, yellowish brown, slightly horny and oily. Xylem of vascular bundles in the center relatively yellowish white, outside scattered with many spotted vascular bundles arranged in 2 - 4 whorls. Odour slight, taste slightly sweet, somewhat bitter and astringent.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Cork consisting of several layers of cells. Cortex relatively narrow, vascular bundles arranged in 2 - 4 interrupted whorls, relatively small in outermost whorl, sometimes only 1 to several vessels, cambium nearly in a ring. Vascular bundles relatively large inward, xylem consisting of vessels, xylem fibres and xylem parenchymatous cells. Central xylem aggregated into 2 - 3 groups. Parenchymatous cells containing sand crystal of calcium oxalate.2.To 2 g of the powder add 20 ml of ethanol, heat under reflux for 40 minutes and allow to stand. To 10 ml of the supernatant liquid add 1ml of hydrochloric acid, heat under reflux for 1 hour, concentrate to about 5 ml, add 10 ml of water, extract with 20 ml of petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC). Evaporate the extract to dryness, dissolve the residue in 2 ml of ethanol as the test solution. Dissolve oleanolic acid CRS in ethanol to produce a solution containing 1 mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel H containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and chloroform-methanol (40:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 10 - 20µl of the test solution and 10µl of the reference solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it iin the air, spray with phosphomolybdic acid TS and heat at 110ºC for about 10 minutes. The blue spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Total ash; Not more than 90%

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, remove remains of rhizome, cut into sections and dry in the sun. Processed with wine: Stir fry the sections as described under the method for stir frying with wine (Appendix ll D) to dryness.

Action  : To replenish the liver and the kidney, to strengthen the tendons and bones, to eliminate blood stasis and stimulate menstrual discharge, and to lead the blood to flow downward.

Indication  : soreness of the lumber and knee joints with weakness in the legs; amenorrhea with mass formation in the abdomen; dizziness due to hyperactivity from the liver

Precautions  : Used with caution in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 4.5 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, protected from moisture.
