Acacia Catechu in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Collection : The branch and stem are collected in winter, peeled, cut into big pieces, decocted with water. The decoction is concentrated and dried.
Description : Square or irregular masses, varying in size. Externally brown or blackish-brown, smooth and somewhat lustrous. Hard texture, easily broken, fracture irregular , lustrous, porous, sticky when moistened, odourless, taste astringent, bitter then sweet.
Identification : 1.Powder: Brown, needle crystals and yellowish-brown masses visible.2.Macerate a matchstick in water solution of the drug, allow to be dyed slightly. After drying , macerate with hydrochloric acid and remove immediately, bake inside a flame, a dark red colour is produced on the matchstick.3.To 5ml of the solution obtained in the assay add 0.5ml of hydrochloric acid and 1ml of formaldehyde TS, heat on a water bath, a yellowish brown precipitate is produced. Allow I to cool and filter. To the filtrate add 2 drops of ferric chloride TS and 0.5g of sodium acetate, a brownish-red colour is produced at lower part and blue colour should be produced.Water: carry out the method as described under determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2) not more than 17%.Assay: weigh accurately 1.8g of the powder (through no 3 sieve), carry out the determination of tanninoids (Appendix X B). It contains not less than 70.0% of tanninoids.
Processing : eliminate foreign matter, break into pieces before use.
Action : To arrest exudation, promote the growth of new tissue, and cure wounds.
Indication : Festering wound that does not heal, skin diseases with watery discharge, ulcers in the mouth, traumatic injury with pain and bleeding
Dosage : 1 to 3 g, wrapped on making decoction, used frequently for making pills or powder; appropriate quantity for external use.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place, protected from moisture.
