Collection  : The drug is collected in summer, remove from soil and dried in the sun.

Description  : Herb of Plantago asiatica: Roots flascilcled and fibrous, basal leaves long petioled, lamina crumpled when whole, ovate elliptical or broadly ovate, 6 - 13cm long, 2.5 - 8cm wide, externally greyish green or blackish green with 5 - 7 distinct arched veins, obtuse or acute at the apex, broadly cuneate at the base, margins entire or irregularly sinuate dentate. Spike several with a long scape. Capsules circumscessile, calyx persistent, odour slightly aromatic, taste slightly bitter.

Identification  : Lamina in surface viewHerb of Plantago asiatica: The epidermal cells of both the surfaces subrectangular, the upper epidermal cells with striated cuticle. Stomata anomocytic, subsidiary cells 3 - 4. Glandular hairs with an elliptical head of 2 cells and unicellular stalk. Non-glandular hairs infrequent, 2 - 5celled. 100 - 320µm long with slightly thickened and faintly warty walls.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, cut into sections and dry in the sun.

Action  : To remove heat and to induce diuresis, to promote expectoration, to reduce heat in blood and to counteract toxicity.

Indication  : edema with oliguria; urinary infection with difficult painful urination; diarrhea caused by summer-damp; cough caused by phlegm-heat; spitting of blood, epistaxis; carbuncles and sores

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 9 to 30 g or 30 to 60 g of the fresh herb to be decocted or to be pounded to obtain the juice for oral administration; for external use, appropriate quantity of the fresh herb to be pounded into paste and applied topically.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated dry place.

Collection  : The fruit spike is collected in summer and autumn when seed is ripe and dried in the sun. The seed is rubbed out and removed from foreign matter.

Description  : Ellipsoid, irregular oblong or triangular oblong, slightly flattened, about 2 mm long, 1mm wide. Externally yellowish brown to dark brown with fine wrinkles and greyish white concave pointed hilum on one side. Texture hard, odor slight and taste weak.

Identification  : 1.Seed of Plantago asiatica: Powder dark yellow brown. The outer epidertmal cells of testa subsquare or slightly elongated tangentially in sectional view with mucilaginous walls. The inner epidermal cells of testa sub-rectangular in surface view, 5 - 19µm in diameter up to about 83µm long, thin walled, slightly sinous usually parqueted. The endosperm cell walls heavily thickened filled with small aleurone grains.2.Plantago depressa: The inner epidermal cells of testa relatively small, 5 - 15µm in diameter, 11 - 45µm long.3.Shake 0.1g of drug with 3ml of water, allow to stand for 30 minutes and filter. To the filtrate add 3ml of dilute hydrochloric acid, boil for 1 minute, cool, neutralize with sodium hydroxide TS, add 1 ml of alkaline cupric tartarate TS, heat on a water bath, a red precipitate is produced. Acid Insoluble ash: Not more than 2.0% (Appendix lX K)Swelling capacity: Weigh accurately 1g of the drug, carry out the method for determination of swelling capacity (Appendix lX D), not less than 4.0.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter.Processed with salt: Stir fry as described under the method for processing with salt water (Appendix 11 D) until it cracks, spray with salt water and stir fry to dryness.

Action  : To remove heat, to cause diuresis and eliminate damp, to relieve dysuria, to clear the eye, and to promote expectoration.

Indication  : edema; dysuria with difficult painful urination; diarrhea caused by summer damp; inflammation of the eye; cough caused by phlegm-heat

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 9 to 15 g, to be wrapped for making decoction.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moisture.
