Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected before flowering in spring or after the aerial part withering in autumn, removed from the outer bark and dried in the sun.

Description  : Ellipsoid or long cylindrical or moniliform. 1 - 5 cm long, 0.5 - 2.5 cm in diameter. Externally whitish or yellowish white with brown patches of cork adhering at a depression. Texture fragile, easily broken fracture starchy and white, wood slightly, radial striated, long cylindrical tubers appearing more fibrous. Odour slight, taste sweetish and pungent.

Identification  : Powder: Whitish, starch granules fairly abundant, simple granules spherical or hemispherical 5 - 34 µm in diameter, hilum pointed, slit shape or stellate compound granules of 2 - 8 components. Non-articulated laticiferous tubes containing yellowish minute granular substances. Thick walled cells rectangular, fusiform, subtriangular or polygonal, walls slightly lignified or nonlignified. Bordered pitted vessels more frequent, usually accompanied with fibre bundles.

Processing  : Radix Kansui (unprepared): Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean and dry in the sun.Stir fry with vinegar: Stir fry as described under the method for stir frying with vinegar (Appendix ll D) to dryness, using 30 kg of vinegar per 100 kg of Radix Gansui.

Action  : To cause drastic purgation and expel the retained water.

Indication  : anasarca, hydrothorax or ascites with dyspnea, constipation and oliguria

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy. Incompatible with Radix Glycyrrhizae.

Dosage  : 0.5 to 1.5 g, mostly used for making pills or powder after processing.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated dry place, protected from moth.
