Cibotium barometz in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Specific Name : Rhizoma cibotii
Collection : The drug is collected in autumn and winter, removed from soil and dried or the drug are removed from hard root, petiole and golden hairs, sliced and dried. It is called "shenggoujipian". And after steaming the drug is partially dried in the sun, cut into thick slices and dried thoroughly "shoujipian".
Description : Irregularly long lump shape, 10 - 30 cm long, 2 - 20 cm in diameter. Externally brown with remains of golden hairs, upper part exhibiting, several reddish brown woody petioles and lower part showing remains of black fibrous roots. Texture hard, uneasily broken, odourless, taste weak and slightly astringent.Shenggoujipian: Irregularly long lump shape or rounded, 5 - 20 cm long, 2 - 10 cm in diameter, 1.5 - 5 mm thick, transverse cut surface pale brown, relatively smooth, exhibiting a brownish yellow raised ring or stripe of xylem a distance of 1 - 4 mm from edges. Identification : Transverse section: Epidermis consisting of 1 layer of cells with remains of golden non glandular hairs. The inner of the epidermis exhibiting 10 or over rows of brownish yellow sclerenchymatous cells, pits distinct. Xylem arranged in rings, composed of the trachieds, both the inner and outer parts exhibiting phloem and endodermis. Cortex and pith composed of parenchymatous cells filling with starch granules, some with yellowish brown contents.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, for the drug not sliced, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thick slices and dry.Rhizoma Cibotii (scalding): Scald the slices with sand as described under the method for scalding (Appendix ll D) until inflated, after cooling remove the remainders of hairs.
Action : To replenish the liver and the kidney , to strengthen on the back, and to relieve rheumatic onditions.
Indication : weakness and aching of the back and loins, limpness of the legs, rheumatic arthralgia
Dosage : 6 to 12 g.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moisture.
